What is the difference between Follistatin 344, 288 and 315?+−
The follistatin gene produces more than one transcript. FST344 is one of them, and the mature protein it secretes is 315 residues, usually written FS-315. FS-288 is a shorter isoform. A 2006 study compared them directly: they bound activin about equally well, but differed sharply in how strongly they attach to cell surfaces, with FS-315 lowest of the three. In one assay FS-288 suppressed an activin-driven response while FS-315 increased it. Papers often say only "follistatin", so which isoform was used is worth checking before comparing results.
Has Follistatin 344 been given to people?+−
Not as a protein. Four studies, one in mice, one in monkeys and two in people, delivered the FS344 gene inside a virus so that muscle cells produced follistatin themselves. That is a different intervention from administering the protein, and no study on the Published Research tab gave purified follistatin protein to an animal or a person. Both human trials were small, uncontrolled and from the same research group, and in each of them two of six participants showed little or no change. The second of the two trials also drew a published letter disputing its functional claims, with a reply from its authors; both are cited on the Published Research tab.
