What is Orexin A?

Orexin A is a chain of 33 amino acids made by a small group of nerve cells in the hypothalamus, near the base of the brain. It is also called hypocretin-1, and most of the published work uses that name. It was found in 1998 alongside a second, shorter chain called Orexin B, which is sold separately here and is a different substance. The two come from the same starting protein but are cut into different pieces. Orexin A is unusual in being identical in humans, cattle, mice and rats.

Orexin A Research & Reference

What Orexin A does in published studies, and how to work with it in the laboratory, are covered in full on two dedicated pages rather than summarised here, so neither the evidence nor the handling detail is cut short.

Safety Data Sheet

The safety data sheet for Orexin A is below as a PDF, in the 16-section GHS format covering identification, hazards, handling, storage and disposal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Orexin A independently tested for purity?+

Yes. Every batch of Orexin A is tested by an independent third-party laboratory using HPLC and MS-UPLC, confirming purity and mass identity before the batch is released. Pure Peptides does not test its own material.

What does "Research Use Only" mean?+

It means Orexin A is supplied for in-vitro laboratory research and for no other purpose, and must not be administered to humans or animals. Orexin A is legal to purchase in the United States for in vitro and non-clinical laboratory research. It carries no FDA approval or therapeutic indication for human use. Orexin A is not a scheduled substance under the Controlled Substances Act. Sold strictly for qualified research use, not human or veterinary administration.

How is Orexin A shipped and stored?+

Orexin A ships from US stock with cold-chain packaging and full tracking; orders placed before noon EST on business days are typically dispatched the same business day. On arrival, store the lyophilized powder at -20°C or below, dry and protected from light.

Is Orexin A the same as hypocretin-1?+

Yes. The peptide was described independently by two groups in 1998 and both names stuck. Most of the roughly 17,500 indexed records use hypocretin-1, so a literature search on "orexin A" alone will miss a large part of the field. Orexin B, or hypocretin-2, is a different peptide and is supplied separately.

Is Orexin A selective for one orexin receptor?+

No. Published work reports that it binds both OX1R and OX2R, and that an OX1R-selective antagonist only partially blocks its effects on locomotor behavior in rats. Note that the compound usually described as a selective OX2R agonist is [Ala11, D-Leu15]-orexin B, a modified analogue, and not Orexin B or Orexin A. The Published Research tab gives the study.
