DSIP is a chain of nine amino acids. It was first isolated in 1977 from the blood of rabbits that had been put into a sleep-like state, and it was named for what the researchers were looking for rather than for anything later proved. Its other name, emideltide, carries no such claim. It has been studied in rats and in small numbers of people with long-standing sleep problems, and the human results do not agree with each other.

It disagrees with itself. Two double-blind placebo-controlled studies in patients with chronic insomnia reached opposite conclusions: one, in 14 patients, reported that sleep efficiency and daytime function reached the levels of normal controls, the other, in 16 patients, reported weak effects that it said could partly reflect a change in the placebo group and concluded the compound was unlikely to be of major benefit. No larger trial appears in the indexed literature. The Published Research tab reports both.
Does DSIP induce sleep, as its name suggests?+−
The name records what its discoverers were looking for in 1977, not a settled finding. The compound also carries the international nonproprietary name emideltide, which makes no such claim. Published controlled studies in patients with chronic insomnia do not agree on whether it improves sleep, and the Published Research tab reports both results.
