What is Oxytocin?

Oxytocin is a peptide of nine amino acids. A sulfur bridge between the first and sixth residues closes it into a ring. It binds a receptor of its own, which works by driving calcium up inside the cell. Vasopressin is a separate hormone. It differs at two of the nine positions and shares the same ring, and the two bind each other's receptors to a degree.

Oxytocin Research & Reference

What Oxytocin does in published studies, and how to work with it in the laboratory, are covered in full on two dedicated pages rather than summarised here, so neither the evidence nor the handling detail is cut short.

Certificates of Analysis

Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory before release. The certificate covering this batch of Oxytocin, and its safety data sheet, are below as PDFs, so the figures on this page can be checked against the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Oxytocin independently tested for purity?+

Yes. Every batch of Oxytocin is tested by an independent third-party laboratory using HPLC and MS-UPLC, confirming purity and mass identity before the batch is released. Pure Peptides does not test its own material.

Can I see the Certificate of Analysis before buying?+

Yes. The Certificate of Analysis for the batch currently in stock can be viewed and downloaded directly on this page, before you place an order. Each certificate states the batch number, the measured purity, and the date of analysis, and can be verified independently with the issuing laboratory using the report number it carries.

What does "Research Use Only" mean?+

It means Oxytocin is supplied for in-vitro laboratory research and for no other purpose, and must not be administered to humans or animals. Oxytocin is legal to purchase in the United States for in vitro and non-clinical laboratory research. Oxytocin is the active ingredient of a prescription medicine sold under another name. The material supplied here is a research-grade preparation, is not that medicine, and holds no marketing authorisation. Oxytocin is not a scheduled substance under the Controlled Substances Act. Sold strictly for qualified research use, not human or veterinary administration.

How is Oxytocin shipped and stored?+

Oxytocin ships from US stock with cold-chain packaging and full tracking; orders placed before noon EST on business days are typically dispatched the same business day. On arrival, store the lyophilized powder at -20°C or below, dry and protected from light.

Is the social-behavior research settled?+

No, and the disagreement is on the public record. A 2005 paper in Nature reported that oxytocin increased transfers made by investors in an economic trust game. In 2020 a registered replication, double-blind, placebo-controlled and powered above 95 per cent, found no effect on the same behavior. In 2026 a second registered report replicated it in 211 people, pooled the evidence to 532 participants, and used equivalence testing to conclude that any effect is too small to be of practical interest; its authors call for a reconsideration of the compound's involvement in social behavior. The Published Research tab quotes all three in their authors' own terms without picking a winner.

Does nasal oxytocin reach the brain?+

One published study measured it directly, sampling blood and cerebrospinal fluid together in fifteen participants. Concentrations rose significantly in both. The timing did not match: blood peaked at 15 minutes and had fallen by 75, while cerebrospinal fluid took up to 75 minutes to reach a significant level, and there was no correlation between the two. So central concentrations do rise, and a blood measurement is not a proxy for a central one. That is a single small study describing kinetics, not a resolution of the wider question.

How is oxytocin different from vasopressin?+

They are both nine-residue peptides with the same disulfide ring, differing at two of the nine positions. That similarity is not a technicality: the two bind each other's receptors to a meaningful extent, which is why studies in this field specify which peptide was given and which receptor was measured. A result reported for one is not a result for the other, and no vasopressin finding appears on this page.
