What is the difference between VPAC1 and VPAC2?+−
They are two separate receptors, both bound by VIP and both bound by a second peptide called PACAP. The published findings on this page divide between them: the macrophage work acts through VPAC1, and the circadian work in the suprachiasmatic nucleus concerns VPAC2, encoded by the gene Vipr2. A study that built nine simplified VIP analogues achieved more than 2,000-fold selectivity for VPAC1 in one of them and no VPAC2 selectivity in any of them, which is a measure of how difficult the two are to separate pharmacologically.
Is research on PACAP research on VIP?+−
No. PACAP is a different peptide that happens to bind the same two receptors, which is why a large part of the literature reports the two together. The immune study cited on the Published Research tab reports VIP and PACAP throughout and does not separate them in its results, so every sentence drawn from it on this page names both. Where a study used only one, the sentence says which.
